Qualitative Tests

Oseng Glass Design has for the purpose of tile development investigated several material properties such as flexural strength, resistance to scratches and stains and stability in compatibility.

Flexural strength was measured using third point loading method. Resistance to staining was assessed using ASTM Designation C 1378-97 methodology. Compatibility was assessed using photo elastic strain measurement of fused material. The Mohs’ method of measuring hardness was carried out.

In addition it is possible to assess impact resistance, thermal shock resistance, water absorption and freeze thaw resistance to recognise international standards.

Scratch Test, Mohs’ Hardness Test

Samples of tiles were tested and had a complete consistency in hardness of 6.5 on Mohs’ hardness scale. As expected, Dark tiles showed scratches more easily due to its nature of the colour. This is comparable with Mohs’ number reported for ordinary materials, e.g. window glass at 5.5, pure vitreous silica glass at 7, bottle glass on 6.5 and porcelain at 7.
